Extremely slow site load times when offline on macOS

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Hi everyone,

I’m running LocalWP on macOS, and I’m experiencing significant performance drops and slow loading times whenever my machine is not connected to the internet.

When offline, simple page requests take a long time to respond or feel stuck loading, whereas performance is normal when connected to Wi-Fi/internet. One of the main reasons I use LocalWP is to work offline and benefit from high local speed without relying on an active internet connection.

Has anyone else encountered this offline slowness on Mac, or is there a specific setting in Local/macOS causing external request timeouts?

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc.

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @centurypixel! Have you had a chance to check through our guide here? It might be worth taking a look to see if any of these common items help in troubleshooting:

HI @centurypixel

Q: Has anyone else encountered this offline slowness on Mac?

A: Not as a result of the LocalWP application.
A: Yes, a few years ago as a result of mis-behaving code (in offline mode) that I wrote in a temporary plugin that should have been deleted once it did it’s job.

Recommendation - A quick test to eliminate plugins as the root-cause of the offline slowness it to move all /plugins/ and /mu-plugins/ into temporary directories. Then reload the slow pages to see if any plugins were contributing to the slowness. Now put all the plugins back and retest to see if the slowness changes. This is a broad-range test to see if you should dig into find a specific miss-behaving plugin or look else where for the root-cause because you just tested the slowness with & without active plugins.

Easiest way to do this is to create 2 temporary -deactivated folders to easily move the files & sub-directories around.

Also, what happens if you downgrade that LocalWP website to PHP 8.2.x … just curious to elimate PHP 8.5.x behaviours.
