# 'Warning! Missing hosts entry. This site may be inaccessible" and "Uh-oh! Could not update hosts file

### What issue or error are you experiencing?
I keep running into this error pertaining to the hosts file. I’ve followed a couple solutions that I’ve found here, however, I’m still running into the same error.
I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the application.
I’ve unchecked the read-only attribute for the hosts file properties.
I’ve tried to manually add my site to the hosts file.

Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @jlgold2th
Have you checked for any other antivirus, security, or firewall applications that could be blocking Local?
Are you running other developer applications simultaneously? That could also cause similar issues. Apps like MAMP, XAMPP, or Docker for example.

I apologize for the late reply.
I made sure that I don’t have any other developer applications running, however I’m still running into the same issue.
What settings should I be on the lookout for as far as antivirus, security, or firewall applications?

Are you using an Admin user account? Is this a work machine with any kind of additional security features?

Yes, I’m using an admin account on my personal computer. I use WebRoot and Windows Defender.

UPDATE!
It is working after I turned off all protection from Webroot. Any idea what settings I need to update so that I can still be protected by Webroot?
Also, it still works with Windows Firewall activated.

Thank you for the update @jlgold2th! Glad to hear were able to get it sorted. I just did a Google search for “Webroot blocking host file” and got a lot of results. Seems to be a common problem. You might have to check out some of these threads or see if they have any documentation on how to “allow” programs access to update the Hosts file. I’m not familiar with Webroot myself to be able to say definitively where that might be.
