The most difficult thing about this issue is that it only happens most of the time.
When I upload an image to the media library it does not show the image and instead shows a file icon where the image upload should be. If I try to add the upload to a page it just shows an empty area. Any ideas how to make the image upload work?

May I ask, what are the image sizes you are attempting to upload?
Do you have any plugins installed that may be conflicting with image upload?
Have you tried adding those same images to a fresh Local site with default settings?

Hey Sam,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. The fresh install was the way to fix this for me, and just for transparency they were mostly large images, then I tried a smaller one at the end but had the same issue.
Anyway, resolved but I think this was a temporary fix and the root of the problem is still unknown.
