Changed local site name and can't login

I thought changing the site name would be an easy thing to do, but I think I’ve messed things up.

I changed the site name from “WP Test Site” to a new name, thinking WP Local would automatically update the site domaine with this change. I opened the site locally (Chrome) and the name wasn’t changed so I logged into WP Admin and in the Settings panel changed the site name as well. This didn’t work either. So I went back to the WP Local dashboard and changed the Site Domaine name as well. That did not help and now I can’t log into the site at all.

When I try logging in with the WP Admin button, I get the error at the top of the window” Warning! This site’s WordPress URL settings do not match the host set in Local. The button “Fit it” does not appear to do anything, as I am still not able to log in. The browser returns the error:
This page isn’t working
wp-test-site.local
didn’t send any data.
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

I tried changing the name back to “WP Test Site”, but that hasn’t helped at all either.

I have looked through similar posts on the topic, but each case seems to be a bit different and not the same as mine.

I created a new “testsite” and I can log into that, but of course it’s just a blank WP site.

What am I missing? How can I fix this?

Hey there @wps! Since you can create a new site and access that okay you should be able to reimport your site and get it working again.

The steps would look like this:

  • Locate the site files on your machine, and save a copy of them to your desktop. If you click Go to Site Folder under your site name it should take you right to where they are located.
  • Once you have those copied, completely delete the site from Local
  • Restart Local/your machine
  • Reimport the site back into Local. You can refer here on how to Restore from only Local site files

Hi @Nick-B,

Thanks very much for your response!

Before I saw your message, I had done a few things: I made a copy of the folder, changed the name, zipped the files, and imported them back via drag drop to Local.

That seemed to work sort of, but then things started to break—like some images are missing, header and footer disappeared, and at first I couldn’t open project pages to edit them (in Divi 5), though regular pages were ok. But some functionality has returned. Basically, regular pages I can edit in Divi but feature images are missing. I have a filterable portfolio grid on one page, and the images are still there. I can edit the project pages connected to the portfolio but the images for those projects have not returned and I rebuilt the header and footer in global themes to get those working again.

What I am still experiencing is when I load a project page, where the image should be, is a blue “loading” box, a little missing image icon, along with this text:

No Results Found. The page you requested could not be found. Try refining your search, or use the navigation above to locate the post

But the image never loads. It seems like most image links are broken. Is it possible for me to repair the links somehow or do I need to replace all the images one by one? Or is there something else I need to do to fix this instead?

Thank you!

There might still be some old references that need cleaned up @wps - or some stuck cache.

I know you’re not troubleshooting Live Links, but the steps in the help article linked below will be similar to what you may need here. For example you could check for any URLs that need to be updated (old URL to new URL), or if you’re using Site Domains, protocol changes from HTTP to HTTPS as well.

Additionally, you might have to flush Divi’s cache/regenerate CSS as well.

Troubleshooting Live Links

Hi @nick-B,

I ended up manually replacing images and link urls—seemed like the best way for me to not break more things
Thanks for your help!

Sounds good @wps! Glad things are working again at least. Thank you for sharing your solution :green_heart:
