Local very slow and Task Manager showing heavy CPU Usage

What issue or error are you experiencing?

I opened my Local website and noted that the PHP needed updating so did that up to 7.4.30 and then started the website. Took a while. Eventually the site opened but opening any link was a slow job. I rebooted the PC WIndows 10 and opened some random websites including my actual website without any issues.
The Local version is 9.5.5+6706 and I see there are others reporting a similar problem. However I do not know where to start looking for the possible problem or which answer I should follow.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos,

I don’t know what the issue is so cannot replicate it, it is there and I need to remove the issue.
I will be away next week and so unable to access the PC abut am hoping someone may be kind enough to post some suggestions as to where to start, roll back to a previous version? I can then hopefully correct the issue on my return.

This site is a TEST bed so I don’t mess up a real site.

If these would help I will try to find and upload them

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @ajw1100

We have a performance guide here with some helpful tips for troubleshooting issues, including a couple Windows specific items:

HI.

Thanks for the fast reply and guide, however much is well outside my capabilities but I will investigate more on my return.

As an experiment I deactivated all the plugins and just had the WP dashboard, it seemed to improve the site speed and the overall CPU usage dropped to around 4% before it was hitting over 65%.

I have re-activated some of the plugins that I do use, Elementor and a couple of others. I am sure some of the pages I had updated to 2024 but now seemed to be only previous 2023 pages so I thought I’d try Updraftplus restore however the last backup stated ‘Not Finished’ Great!

My next plan is to export my clubs site and import it in to my Local website. Can you point me to an idiots guide to do that ? J

Best regards

Alan.

I have updated my profile photo, it is now a smilie on a bowling ball. More in keeping with a bowls club!

A bit off topic but Plan B anyone?
I have exported using the WP Tools>export exported the main clubs website. I am attempting to install this alongside my Local Test site.
The Test site is asking for a zipped file and the exported site is exported as:
“This is a WordPress eXtended RSS file generated by WordPress as an export of your site”
It then goes on to advise the file is used to transfer that content from one site to another, and gives 7 lines of guidance.
I do not think an RSS file is a Zip file that Local is looking for.

I have probably done something wrong but I am only following the suggestions any assistance would be appreciated.

Regards
Alan.

Hey Alan –

You are correct in that an RSS file will not work. Strange how you ever got that. The easiest way to back up a site for import to Local is by using WP Migrate Lite (free). It creates a zip file, and you then import that (you can drag it into Local after clicking Add a site or just clicking the ‘+’.

If you drag the file into Local, it will ask (I think) if you want to use the Default WP setup (Apache or nginx server, PHP version and MySQL version) or Custom settings. Then, Local will do the rest.

Hi NdnaJnz.
Thanks for the advice, Not sure what to do as there was no Zip folder to upload so I exported from the main website and imported to my test website… Good news was it seemed to work fine. Bad news is that loading any section from the WP sidebar menu is back taking ages (Been looking at the Plugins page to open for around 10 minutes and it still has not opened it yet, tried earlier opening the pages tab then gave up. Task Manager was showing Local 32 CPU@34% and memory at 43% and Power usage Very High.
Oh, Plugin page available now around 20min later.

I have deactivated all plugins but site still far to slow.

@ajw1100

Did you try some of the Windows options in the guide I shared above? Those might help. If it’s a site level issue though you could also try swapping the theme out to see if that helps.

Away on holiday so am not able to try anything. I deleted some pages and that seemed to have helped.
I will be able to play again next week.

Sounds good @ajw1100! If you have any other questions or concerns don’t hesitate to reach back out. We are always happy to help!

The best solution is to close the apps with the most CPU resources.
Use PC optimization tool, to clean cleaning junk files, unwanted apps, invalid registry entries, defragging hard disk, and much more.

Thank you for the tip @Alinah! :green_heart:

Do you need help in choosing an optimization tool?

@ajw1100 are you still having any issues with this? Don’t let us pressure you but if you need any more help let us know

Hi Nick-B
Just back from a holiday cruise and not had time to see if the situation has improved or not. Give me a week or so and I will then be able to update this thread. Hopefully my Local will be back to normal speed!

Sounds great @ajw1100! Hope you had a wonderful holiday :sunglasses:

Not so much an optimization tool, more a new brain…
Thanks anyway!!

Hi Alinah. Thanks for the suggestion, I am wary of using programs that purport to optimize. I did use CCleaner many moons ago until it managed to mess up my PC, I have never used one since.

Maybe they have improved and are safer now?
My Local was running fine until the recent update, which makes me think that may be the problem.

You could try downgrading if that is the case and see if things return to normal on a previous Local version:

We also have a Beta release out for our new version coming up if you want to try that:

Firstly, I did not know I could do several replies in one post, is this the ‘Blockquote’ in the reply header "

The clubs website uses generate theme, I have no idea what my ‘Local’ uses. I would certainly not want to risk messing up the club site.

Your Local site and Club site aren’t connected so any changes you make in Local won’t impact the live site unless your push/migrate your Local site up to it.

If you imported the Club site into Local it should be using the same theme.
