Plus Sign Not Appearing on Left Sidebar

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Plus sign no longer appearing next to categories inside of the Editor (I.e., Pages, Patterns, etc.).

I can only add, but not create. I am new to Local, but it’s worked for me early on. When I used it tonight, it’s when I noticed the missing plus sign.

System Details

  • Local Version: Version 9.2.5+6810

  • Operating System (OS) and OS version: MacOS 15.6

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi, @valance. Do you mean in the WordPress admin area? Or in Local?

If you mean the WordPress admin area, you need to be logged in as an admin user to be able to create posts/patterns etc. You can try creating a new admin user from Local’s site shell:

  1. Start Local and your site.

  2. Click “Site Shell” to open a shell for your site in the terminal.

  3. Type this, replacing the values in brackets with your own (but omitting the brackets):

wp user create [username] [email] --user_pass=[password] --role=administrator

Then log in to your WordPress site as that user and see if you can create things again.

If that doesn’t help, please can you share a screenshot to explain what you think you’re missing?

Thanks very much for getting back to me.

To give you some context, I am following along with a course on LinkedIn Learning called Introduction to WP Blocks.

When I installed Local on my Mac, I followed the course’s instructions.

When I open Local, I would click on the “WP Admin” button, which would launch the WP Dashboard in the Safari web browser. I would also click the “Open Site” button to opene a separate tab for the staging site.

I do not recall having to create a password during the initial setup on my Mac. Whenever I’m using Local, I just open Local, then click “WP Admin” to open the Dashboard and then get to work.

With all that said, I did turn off the site and then turned it back on, but no change. I also verified via the WP’s “All Users” area of Users that my user account lists me as an Administrator.

Hey @valance!

Could you send us some screenshots or a short video of what you’re seeing and what is missing? You could use something like Loom or similar.

That might help to make things more clear. Keep us posted and we’d be happy to help further!

Thanks for the reply, Nick.

Video should now show you what I’m referring to. I should see a “plus” next to at least Pages and Patterns, but I otherwise do not see them.

Thanks for the video, @valance. That’s how the Editor area of WordPress looks for me too, whether I use Local or my hosted WordPress environment.

Perhaps the UI has changed since the course you’re following was made?

To create pages now, you can click the “Pages” menu item and then “Add Page”:

Create a page from the editor

To create patterns it’s the same — click “Patterns” and then “Add Pattern”:

Create a pattern from the editor

If you don’t see those or have further questions about following the course, you could try contacting the course author. Local doesn’t alter the default copy of WordPress so as long as you’re logged in as an admin user all WordPress features should be available to you. It may just be that the newest WordPress has a different UI to the video you’re following (or WordPress itself may have changed since you previously used it).

Hello Nick; thanks for getting back at me.

In struggling with this issue, investigating and making other inquiries, it appears that you may be right in that UI decisions might have changed since the course was filmed last year. It appears, in the end, that it was never a Local issue, but that of my getting to grips with the blocks editor and how it works.

Even the latest info from Wordpress.com’s page on creating patterns recommends that a pattern blocks could be added, but then an option is then available to create a new one.

I am working through things, but it’s my own site and it won’t have too many pages, so will press on.

Thanks for all of the help, Nick.

That makes sense, @valance. Thanks for following up, and best of luck with your site!
