Sites Disappeared from Local – Files Still Present on My Computer

Hello,

I’m reaching out because the WordPress sites I was working on in Local have suddenly disappeared from the application. I didn’t delete them, and I’m not sure what caused this issue.

Fortunately, I still have all the site files saved on my computer, including the app, conf, and logs folders for each project. I’d like to know how I can restore these sites back into Local or troubleshoot what might have caused them to vanish.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Alexandre

System Details

  • Local Version: Version 9.2.5+6810

  • Operating System (OS) and OS version:

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Thank you for reporting this, @AlexandreBeust. It sounds like your files are still in your Local Sites folder, but they are no longer listed in Local? This could happen if Local’s sites.json was corrupted due to a disk write issue or power failure.

Please could you share your OS and your Local logs so that we can look into this?

To restore the sites back into Local, you can zip up each site folder and drag it into Local, following the steps here:

Hi Nickc! Thank you very much for your quick answer! Yes, the problem was caused due to a power failure, and yes, the files are still in my local sites folder, but not listed in local (as you mentioned). Ive tried import back the sites by zipping the entire folder and dragging back to the local app, but no success… It returns a message saying “Unexpected token ‘x’ is not valid JSON. Will try the steps on the link you have provided and will come back here with the results

Thanks for your reply, @AlexandreBeust. Are you on Windows 10 or 11?

If you see an “unexpected token” error and can’t import your zip files, you can try:

  1. Quit Local.
  2. Open the Windows File Explorer.
  3. Make sure you have enabled “show hidden items”.
  4. Browse to This PC → [your hard drive] → Users → [your username] → AppData → Roaming → Local.
  5. Rename the sites.json file (it might just appear as ‘sites’) to sites-backup.json.
  6. Rename the sites-organization.json file to sites-organization-backup.json.
  7. Start Local. It will load without displaying sites, but you can import them again from the link in my previous reply.

If you need further help, please can you share your OS and Local logs?

Definetly! My Os is Windows 10

Great, thanks for confirming. I updated the steps in my previous reply to point to the Windows 10 URL for ‘show hidden items’.

Local Logs.zip (958.8 KB)

I am sending the local logs files (hope ive got it right)

Thank you for your OS and logs, that’s helpful!

I updated my steps above to help based on the errors in your logs.

Please can you follow those and let us know if that helps?

Nickc! Thank you so much! I did not import all my websits yet, just made a test with one, and at leas I was able to access the wp-admin! Still loooking to see if I lost anything, but so far everything is working as It should be! Thank you so much for the quick reply, as well as for the detail answer! I will come back here again in case i find any issues, but so far everything seems to be working great!
