Uh-Oh! Could not update host file (HELP)

I have done many steps given from the community provided by you guys. Everything doesn’t work.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @zuhieralif

We have a Windows Troubleshooting guide below that goes over some common items worth checking. For example, make sure you’re running Local as an admin user, that you don’t have any security blockers, and that Local has access to update your Hosts file.

Hi @Nick-B ,

I have done all the steps given. All of it doesn’t seems to work at all.

Are you running other developer applications simultaneously? That could also cause similar issues. Apps like MAMP, XAMPP, or Docker for example.

Is this a personal device or one issued by your employer?

I do have XAMPP and Docker but both of them is not running at all.

This is personal device.

It’s possible one of those applications still is blocking access in the background so you might double check.

Since you’re getting the first prompt in the bottom right corner you might also check the notification settings mentioned here to make sure the second prompt is showing up.

Allow Local to Make Changes

Not sure what I need to do after

“If you only get the first prompt in the corner, try clicking on the three dots next to the X, and Go to notification settings to ensure those are enabled.”

But there’s nothing to configure after that but the notifications is turn on. But I am sure after that bottom right corner noti is showing below also showing:

Also to take notes, this only happens today. It used to work fine before this.

What does this supposed to mean? I have done the privilege issue as well. Nothing seems to work like I mentioned.

The three dots next to the X that I was referring to were in that Host Redirection box. There is a second prompt you should get to allow Local to proceed. There is an example in my link above.

It’s hard to pinpoint, but something on your device is blocking Local from moving forward now. It’s either still a security setting or one of those other applications interfering.

I have done deeper research! It’s working now fortunately.

Great find @zuhieralif! I can’t say I’ve come across that myself. It might be a good addition to our Windows troubleshooting guide.
