Can't access site locally (ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED)

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Spontaneously I can no longer access my site locally. When I try either the WP Admin option or the Open Site option I get the error:

Hmmm… can’t reach this page

It looks like the webpage at http://kids-on-ice.local/wp-admin/ might be having issues, or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

*ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED
*
However, when Live Link is active, I can access the site remotely.

I have tried all the solutions posted in various posts over the years:

  • Reset the network
  • Flushed the cache
  • Cleared my browser cache/memory
  • Created a new site (same problem)
  • Exported and reimported the site
  • Made sure there was no VPN running or Proxy set up

So at this point I have no way to further develop the site I am working on.

Are there any other suggestions?

Other notes:

  • Clicking on PHP Version details link also results in the same error message
  • I am using “site domain” and “apache”

System Details

  • Local Version: Version 9.2.8+6882

  • Operating System (OS) and OS version: Windows 11, 25H2

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hey @boulderados!

Do you get the same error if you try in a different browser other than your primary one? Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, etc

Have you tried changing your Router Mode to see if that has an impact?

Preferences>Advanced>Router Mode

I have installed FireFox and it does work in that browser.

I had it in the local router mode before and I had the same problem. But I can’t use local mode anyway as I need HTTPS supported.

I’m glad to hear that it works in Firefox for you @boulderados

You might check if your primary browser has any available updates. Or see if reinstalling it helps.

If you utilize browser extensions, these could get in the way too. So you could try disabling or removing those as well for additional troubleshooting.

Yeah, well I’m not thrilled not to be able to work in Edge but at least it’s a workaround.

In any case my system is fully up to date, and I have only two standard plug-ins running. I disabled them just to see what would happen, but it had no effect.

II did do various searches and found that users with this issue seem to pop up every now and then but there never seems to be an actual solution.

Yeah it’s a tricky one to narrow down @boulderados as it could have a lot of different root causes.

Some users have run into it because of their VPN, network or proxy settings, which you’ve already double checked.

Have you double-checked all of your admin privileges, antivirus, and security features as well? Sometimes we’ve seen these reset after an update or flag something that wasn’t blocked previously.

Do you use any browser extensions in Edge as well?

I got a bit further. It seems to be a security issue.

I found that although the router mode is set to site domains and the SSL is available and trusted, when I click on the WP Admin or Open Site Buttons, Local does not open the page using HTTPS but using plain HTTP. This seems to work fine in Firefox but unfortunately not in Edge. And as edge hides the HTTP:// part of the URL, I did not notice it.

When I change the URL to include HTTPS, it works just fine

So, I am guessing that this is a small bug in Local.
