After installing Local on my MacBook Pro 16" (2019) and trying to create a test site, it is impossible to change the folder in “Local Site Path”. Every time you try to change it remains the default one?
I would like to move it to iCloud because I have more space there instead of the HD of my Mac.
I’ve tried what’s written on “Change a site’s folder location - Local”, but I was unable to find the “Preference” section to choose “New Site Defaults” from there.
Is there anyone who can help me sort this out?
Thanks!
What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc
Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.
If you click on the profile icon in the upper left hand corner of your Local app there will be a drop down with a Preferences option. Let me know if that appears for you and if you need any further help!
I’ve found the Preference and changed the Folder into one created in iCloud. Now I can find everything on every Mac device I have connected to that account.
In case I need to work from another Mac for example (where I have downloaded Local and logged in, of course), do you think I will be able to keep working on the same site since the file are on iCloud? I imagine this would mean I need to have access to internet.
Hey @Fra! Glad to hear that things are working for you now
If you work from another Mac, once you get Local up and running you’ll have to reimport that site first into the new instance. So essentially you’ll be working on two different versions of the same site. If you go back to the first Mac you’ll have to reimport the new copy to make sure you get the latest. It’s a bit more of a manual process to work on multiple machines at the moment but we are exploring ways to make it smoother. There are some other alternative options for this and we have some feature requests around the forums here that other users have made suggestions for if you want to look around at those
It seems like the best choice is to leave everything on my iCloud just to be sure not to lose anything is my Mac has problems, then work just on this Mac.
To import and export you mean clicking the three dots on the site name right and select export, then on the other Mac create a new site and import the .zip file? Is that right? Just in case I had to do that.
Thanks again for your support, you saved my day as a new “developer”!
Always a great idea to back up and save your work @Fra! Definitely one of the most important rules of being a developer
You’re right about the import/export. There are also manual ways you can go about it too if the zip is having problems importing. We have details on all of this in our help docs. I’ll share some information below including on our Cloud Backups feature just in case you want to make doubly sure your sites are backed up.
Just one more question if I can ask. Does Local update automatically or is it another way I need to do it? Because in the Cloud Backups sections it says to install the latest version of Local. Now I’m just wondering if every now and then I have to reinstall local overwriting everything or not. Please excuse my question but I am at the very beginning of my dev journey
Local doesn’t update automatically. Generally Local will give you a prompt if there is a new release, but if you’re not sure if you’ve clicked through one or not you can click on your toolbar and Check for Updates as well. We also list all of our releases with notes on the page below, so you can always check there to see if you have the latest release and also update manually by downloading the newer version.
Then I just simply download Local again and do it as if it was the first time downloading it (overwriting)? Will I not lose all my files by doing this?
You will given a prompt in your Local app and when you update you won’t lose any data or be “starting over”. It will be just like updating any other application where there might be new features or bug fixes but your sites and work will still be there
That said it’s still always a good idea to back up your work as we’ve discussed
