Changing site domain name not working?

Hi there,

I’m working on a new test version of my current website, with a completely different theme to the one online.

Since I wanted to be able to open both sites (online and local) in my browser and see the difference in the tabs, I named the local site xy-test, not knowing that it would already have the extension .local, so at the end it was xy-test.local.

Now I just wanted to get rid of the -test part because I thought it would be better for when I’m uploading the site to the server, but the provisioning is already running for half an hour… And I’m also reading several support tickets with problems related to the name change, where people can’t access the site after changing the domain name, so it’s getting a bit frustrating here.

Maybe my move was unnecessary and a bit stupid, but still: why have the option to change the name if it doesn’t work?

I just updated Local yesterday and I’m running the latest version of Sonoma on a Mac.
Local logs are attached.

Thanks
Roberta

Update: After waiting more than an hour - and not expecting an answer on a Saturday - I quit Local and restarted it. Fortunately, nothing has changed and I have full access to the site.

Now a question for when it is time to get my site online. Should I export/import content and styles rather than delete the current online site and upload the one I have built locally? What would happen with the ‘wrong’ domain name still running locally?

Thank you!
Roberta

Hi @Satyrika

Regarding your original issue, when you changed the domain name did you get a prompt on your machine for your password to allow Local to make changes to the hosts file?

Now a question for when it is time to get my site online. Should I export/import content and styles rather than delete the current online site and upload the one I have built locally? What would happen with the ‘wrong’ domain name still running locally?

Is your plan to completely replace your current site with the one in Local? Or do you just want to change out the theme?

Your Local site won’t have any hold over your live site since it’s offline. If you “migrate” your Local site up to replace your live site there might still be URLs that need some cleaning up with search and replaces if they don’t get fixed up automatically by a migration plugin or Local Connect job.
