This was talked about a few months back, but I was just wondering if there has been any progress? I really do think, actually, I know, Local would have many more Linux users if a Snap, Flatpak, or Appimage was created to simplify the installation on Linux. If the development team doesn’t have time, can someone in the community work on this? I would volunteer myself to take this on if allowed. I’m running Debian, and the install is fairly easy, but for some distribution users, especially, openSUSE users, the install is nearly impossible. As I mentioned, I’m currently running Debian, but openSUSE Tumbleweed and Leap are my Linux distributions of choice.
Thanks!
What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc
Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.
Thanks for checking in @cmccullough. This is still on our list — we’re currently investigating ways to package for Ubuntu 24 since that currently requires manual setup, and AppImage/Snap is one approach we’re considering.
The work will also include testing with Local’s build pipelines and update infrastructure, so it’s not something that can be easily worked on outside of the Local team. We would love your help testing when new builds are available, though.
Hello, I would be more than happy to help with snap. I currently maintain over 200 KDE snaps and have a bit of experience. I am on Plucky and have dependency issues with deb, looking at manual install.
Cheers,
Scarlett
