Disk image couldn't be opened

What issue or error are you experiencing?

I have a Mac Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015 model with OS 12.7.5 and 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor.

When I download Local and try to open it, I get this message: “The disk image couldn’t be opened. Couldn’t read file or malformed UDIF image.”

What do I do next?

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hey @nealumphred – Welcome to the Local Community!

It might be that the download was corrupted, so as a first step, I’d try re-downloading the dmg to see if that fixes things:

If you still have issues, you might try working through some of the suggestions in this blog post:

Thanks for the response.

I tried to follow the directions in the iBoysoft article but the Local disk never showed up on the left sidebar of my Disk Utility window.

Reading through the article, I don’t think that the disk image is supposed to show up in Disk Utility, rather, the article indicates that using Disk Utility is a way to verify that the DMG isn’t corrupt.

Were you able to run the “Verify” step and navigate to where the Local DMG was downloaded?

Also, did you try re-downloading the DMG to ensure that there wasn’t an issue with downloading it form the internet?
