Does it matter what OS version you choose of localwp if hosting is going to be a different OS system?

Hello Everyone,

Okay so this is a total newbie question and I’m pretty sure it will give a lot of you a good laugh, but I’m going to ask it anyway. You gotta start out somewhere, right?

So, just found localwp and I’m very new to developing a wordpress site. I was a bit confused about what version of localwp to download - and here’s why:

  1. I’m working from a pc, so I assumed that Windows was automatically the choice I should make.
  2. However, once I plan to push my site live, I plan to host it on Vultr using Ubunto OS.
  3. And here’s what I’m confused about - if I’ve built the wordpress site locally on my windows pc, when I push my wordpress site to host it on a linux based server will it still work?
  4. Does it matter that it was built locally on a pc but will run on Ubunto 20.04 OS server?

I’m showing my ignorance because I’d prefer not to work on building it here only to have it not work because I didn’t build it in the right environment. Go ahead and have a laugh! LOL… :joy::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hello @wordpnoob - welcome to the Local community!

To answer your question, you’ll want to download the Windows version if you’re developing with Windows locally.

When you migrate your site to your server running Linux, your site will run there too (it’s only the site and the database you need to transfer, not anything else from your Local app running on Windows).

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Sam

Hello Sam,

Thank you for answering my newbie question. I assumed as much, but wanted to make sure before I started doing a lot of work building out the site. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
