Is it possible to create a staging site on local?

Hey

Is it possible to create a staging site local of a live multisite? I have my own host and do not wish to change. I have ssh and c-panel etc. Live is running on Lightspeed Server. So what do I select on Local? PHP is 8.3.

I saw an integration to VSC. I assume I can then edit files directly in VSC?

Thx

Hey @Hebhansen! Every site in Local is essentially a Staging Site since it’s an offline development application

Working with multisites can be a bit tricky. We have a guide below to walk you through how to get started with creating a multisite in Local and importing one.

So considering my site is Multisite Domain it has some disadvantages in terms of manual setup. Is it then recommended to build the staging on the server instead?

Will staging cause double up of server space?

Finally, if Local is the choice what server do I choose, considering i am on Lightspeed?

It’s not really a matter of what’s recommended it just depends on your comfort level and needs. A positive of creating a Staging environment on your current server would be having everything in one place to manage I suppose and less risk of a conflict since you’ll be duplicating this on the same server environment.

Will staging cause double up of server space?

Yes, this could be considered a negative for using Staging on your server if you’re paying for storage space or have any limitations there.

I’m not familiar with Lightspeed but you’ll want to look into their specs and see what type of server environment you’re on now. When you build your multisite in Local you’ll want to be sure to match WP/PHP/DB and server settings.

Staging on site does it double media or just the site?

Staging multisite domain on server, is that a manual thing and do you happen to have a manual to do so. I assume WP Engine’s staging plugin is off the table considering the WP WPE war!?

Litespeed I believe builds on Apache, I am not sure how to go about it and what conflicts to expect?

Hey @Hebhansen

You ask a lot of great questions! Our primary focus here is around working with the Local app. For that you have our guide I provided around getting started with multisites and if you decide to try that and have any trouble, we’ll be glad to assist as much as we can.

For questions about setting up a Staging subdomain on your live site, on your server, Litespeed configurations, or even WP Engine features and products, these would probably be best answered by their specific support teams or a developer with familiarity with multisite and Lightspeed. As far as the WP/WPE “war”, that has no bearing whatsoever on their ability to provide you support or Staging environments

Thx for your support Nick. It’s very appreciated. I have the impression that local staging is not the right thing for me. I want a simple way of doing things and easy push to live. I am frustrated that multisite makes it so complicated, but I will see where it goes.

Thx again

Of course @Hebhansen! Nothing is really simple and easy when it comes to multisite

If you’re looking for a simple tool to help with pulling and pushing multisites, our friends at Delicious Brains have a lot great functionality for supporting multisites built into their WP Migrate DB PRO plugin:
