Pages and content disappear for no reason

This could be a carbon copy of the last time I raised this issue. I created a project last year. After leaving it alone for a few months, I went back to it just now, and several pages on which I’d created some complex and appealing content were now empty and had reverted to the Default template. WTF?

Hey @sol, I’m sorry that you’re dealing with this!

Could you give some additional details about what happened?
What version of Local is installed?

Can you describe the WordPress site a little more – for example, are you using any page builders or other non-default WordPress editing tools?

Was there some other action that was taken recently – for example, was Local updated to a new version? Was the OS updated to a new version? Was there a recent push or pull that happened?

Hi Ben, and thanks for your response.

Using Local 5.9.3+5100. IIRC, the site was originally built using a previous version, but that wasn’t a problem before.

And yes, I’m using the Elementor page builder, but that wasn’t a problem before either. The only other thing I can think of is that I updated the OS from Mojave to Catalina (which I’m coming to regret more and more).

The problem pages are all well down the site hierarchy – examples of specific projects, all built using different plugins for galleries, sliders, accordions, image flips, etc – and all on the Full Width template. The content has gone bye-bye and the page templates have all reverted to Default.

(I may have a backup somewhere in my Time Machine, but I’m a little reluctant to open it using this.)

Sol

Before upgrading to Catalina, did you take any backups of the site from Local? I usually recommend right-clicking on a site and selecting “Export” so that I have a zip file with everything that’s needed to restore the site.

Trying to restore from Time Machine might work, the only potential issue I’ve seen is that the raw database files can get corrupted easily. This is why it makes sense to stop the site when not working on it, and exporting it after certain big milestones – these things export the database into a sql dump file that can be used to re-create the database.

You might take a look at the “Restoring From Only Local Site files” section of this help doc to see if that allows you to re-create the sites as new ones in Local:

Good luck!
