Unable to Open Site and Switch Routers / Hosts in Local

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Hello!

I was hoping if someone in the support community could help me understand what is going on with my Local application.

It seems as if i’m no longer able to switch routers (or hosts) from Site Domains to localhost like I would normally. My Windows machine asks me if I would like to give administration privileges to make changes to my hosts file (/etc/hosts) like it would normally, but when doing this, I get “Uh-oh! Could not update hosts file… please ensure that the hosts file is not locked by anti-virus” - see attachment below.

Aside from that issue, i’m trying to launch my site by clicking on “Open Site”, but i’ll get another popup message from my Emsisoft Business Security app stating it has intercepted an exploit attempt and has been blocked (C:\Program Files (x86)\Local\Local.exe) - see attachment below.

This is what happens when I Start other sites and try to open those as well:

I’m starting to think this may have something to do with a restart I did a few weeks ago since there was updates being made (from our third-party IT Department). That’s actually when I started to notice the Local app starting to fail to function as normal.

Has anyone run into this? Should I be contacting our in-house IT Support for this or am I able to fix on my own..

I would appreciate any direction on this!

Thank you,

System Details

  • Local Version: Version 9.2.9+6887

  • Operating System (OS) and OS version: Windows 11 Pro 24H2

So I managed to get the site to open in my browser and successfully login and browse.

However, when clicking “Open Site” to begin with, I still get the “Could not update hosts file” message. At least the site opens now.

I’ll report back the steps i’ve taken to get to this point, but i’m still trying to solve for the “Could not update hosts file” issue that happens at the start.

Hi @tdeltoro

We have a Windows Troubleshooting guide below that goes over some common items worth checking. For example, ensure that Local is running as an administrator, that there are no security blockers, and that Local has access to update the Hosts file.
