Unable to save work or publish any part of my website on Local

What issue or error are you experiencing?

I can’t save work or publish anything on Local once I’ve been working on a website for a while. It started with one website that I had been working on for a few weeks but is now happening on a new website. I can work on existing websites, if I only do minor changes,. I tried to start a new website and was working on it all day with no problems, but it suddenly started happening with the new website now. I have tried deactivating all plugins but it doesn’t solve the issue.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Hard to show, it’s just the arrow/circle by “publish” keeps spinning and never updates. Same for any changes I make to site settings, they don’t save, just the unending spinning of the arrow.

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @sdianora

Have you checked out our performance guide here? We’ve got a lot of good troubleshooting tips here along with some Windows specific items as well that might be useful:

Yes, I reviewed that document - it didn’t help me.

What other steps or troubleshooting have you attempted other than disabling plugins?

Are you using the same theme for all of the sites? Did you try swapping that out?

Did you attempt the Windows items mentioned in the performance guide?

Are you running other developer applications simultaneously? That could also cause similar issues. Apps like MAMP, XAMPP, or Docker for example.

Does your device have plenty of disk space available?

Hello

Thank you for trying to help. I am fairly new to this, so I really appreciate your time.

I’ve tried a different theme and I get the same issue. Everything is fast enough, not really slow at all. I can make changes but it won’t save anything (site setting etc) or publish.

I don’t have any other programs running at all when I’m trying to use Local.

Disk space: I have 839GB free of 951GB

Other things I’ve tried:

  • Restore from backup.
  • Exporting and deleting all websites
  • Completing uninstalling Local (including all files) and re-installing a fresh download.
  • Only importing one website (that isn’t that big) to try, but the issue persists.

Here are the answers to the performance issues, although, it doesn’t seem slow at all. It just won’t save or publish.

Is only the Local app slow, or does the entire machine slow down?

It isn’t really slow, it works fine, it just doesn’t save or publish. The entire machine is good too.

If you notice that only Local is slow, try quitting and restarting it.

Restarted multiple times. Including shutting down my PC and restarting, multiple times.

If you notice the entire machine is slow, a full system reboot should help.

Entire machine is fine although I did a full system reboot as well.

Check the currently running applications to see if they are competing with Local for resources.

I shut everything down and only used Local. Still the same. I don’t have any other developer apps.

Are there multiple sites in Local?

There was, but only about 5. I exported them all, deleted them, uninstalled Local and reinstalled a fresh download then only imported the one website. Still the issue persists. Only one site now that isn’t that big.

Are there any sites that are no longer needed and could be removed? Exporting and archiving old sites is easy, and importing a site is as easy as dragging and dropping the zip onto Local!

Done.

Are you using Local on Windows?

Due to differences in the file system and firewalls, some Windows users have reported issues with the Local app as well as slow site performance. Thankfully, there are some tips and tricks to get around these pesky Windows-specific issues:

What domain suffix is your site using? Some users have seen significant speed improvements by changing their site domain from .local to another value (.abc for example). The site domain can be set during site creation or edited after the site has been created. A global default for new sites can be set in Local’s Preferences.

Not sure how to do this and it isn’t slow.

What folder is your site saved in? Some users have seen significant speed improvements by moving their site out of the default path (C:\Users{user-name}\Local Sites) and placing the site in another folder. This file path can be set during site creation. A global default for new sites can be set in Local’s Preferences.

Not sure how to do this and it isn’t slow.

Are there errors in the browser console?

No errors.

Is the WordPress dashboard slow?

WordPress dashboard is not slow.

Does adjusting server settings help?

Not sure how to do this.

When you’re clicking save/publish are there any errors in the dev console?

Maybe using a tool like Query Monitor could also help point to if there are any choke points.

Debugging your WordPress site using Query Monitor

There are errors in dev console when I save/publish see screen shots. No idea what these are or how to correct.

And from Query Monitor:

Does any of this help define the issue?

Thanks again for your help.

There are some connection errors in there. Is there anything unique about your connection? VPN, office network, proxy, etc?

None of those, home office, my home PC. Is there anything I should check for?

Outside of this do you have any trouble connecting to the internet? Speeds and everything are solid?

What about if you try a different browser when you’re doing this work? For example if you’re using Chrome trying in Firefox, Safari, Brave, etc

OMG - That was it. I opened it in Edge, and it’s saving and publishing now. You have no idea how frustrating this was and so simple…in the end. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Is there a preferred browser for working with Local? or any idea how I can troubleshoot the Chrome issue? I don’t expect you to figure it out; you’ve done a lot to help me resolve this, but if you could point me in the right direction, that would be great.

And, thanks again.

Nice! Glad to hear that helped out @sdianora! We don’t have a preferred browser type for Local. I would assume most users are probably on Chrome.

As far as some initial Chrome troubleshooting goes, you could give these a try:

  • Completely clearing out your cache and cookies

  • Disable all browser extensions

  • Check for Chrome updates, or try uninstalling/reinstalling

Perfect…I’ll do that!
