Update to 2.4.3 for Windows does not work

I updated my windows 7 machine this morning and after updating, I tried starting flywheel. I was asked if I would like to run as an administrator as usual and I clicked yes. That’s it. I have not even seen the flywheel process in my task manager. I tried restarting the computer, accessing the original .exe file and not the shortcut but nothing works. How can this be resolved?

Hey @JayCBD

You shouldn’t have to run Local as an administrator. There are only a few things that Local needs admin privileges for.

Can you provide the Local log so we can see if anything is turning up in there?

I am having trouble finding the log file on Windows 7. Which folder is it in? Keep in mind that local doesn’t start so I can’t request it

Right – sorry about that!

For me, that file is located here:

C:\Users\benjamin\AppData\Roaming\Local by Flywheel\local-by-flywheel.log

– Ben

crazy to report but I went to ‘Roaming’ but I could not find ‘Local by Flywheel’ in the

Since the folder isn’t there, should I re-install the program? I hesitated on this decision because I fear I may lose my current websites.

That doesn’t sound good @JayCBD

If you open VirtualBox, do you see the local-by-flywheel Virtual Machine?

Here’s what mine looks like: http://flywheel.link/128c7f76ac1c

In the interest of trying to salvage data – do you know where the site files are located? I would copy those to another location, for example your desktop.

Either way, you should try re-installing Local, but not as an administrator. You want it to be installed by your regular user. Any special privileges that Local needs, it will ask for.

Let me know if you run into any other problems.

– Ben

I will reinstall local. Can you tell me where the folder is with those files for previously created websites? I’ve searched with no results for a while.

Here’s another odd thing; what I did to install local was just download and install from the website. I didn’t install virtual box but it did. Is this process correct? I will redo the process based on your comments because I really love this application.

The newest version 2.4.3 works on Windows the first time after you install it. After that any subsequent attempt to start it does nothing, you get the hourglass for a second and then nothing. This is the relevant error from the log.

I tried to start Local this morning, got that error.
Reinstalled,
set up a test site,
shut the site down,
then the application,
Tried to restart and got the error again.

For the record reinstalling does not affect my sites, they’re all still there when it reinstalls. It’s just tedious.

Further investigation shows that the Local By Flywheel background process is not exiting correctly. Opening Task Manager and killing one of the 3 running processes kills all three and allows it to restart.

Well this is almost my concern. After upgrading and restarting local nothing happened. It failed from the update.

Here is my log after uninstalling and reinstalling the previous version that worked. It gives an error that the environment is not available when I cick on previously made sites. I will now restart and install the most recent update from October 12 and post the log files after depending on the progression

local-by-flywheel.log (250.0 KB)

Hey @JayCBD

It depends on if you’ve set a custom location for where the site files should be. By default the location is set to the Local Sites folder within your home directory.

Did updating to the October 12 version allow you to get things working again?

In general, it’s hard to “go back” to an older version of Local without completely removing the VM first. I’ve been able to do it successfully sometimes, but more often than not I’ve had to nuke the VM and try again with the older version.

the october 12 release worked fine after re-installing. Thanks!

Great to hear @JayCBD – Thanks for letting us know!
