That fixed my hung installation now when I create a site the I get
“Wordpress installation failed”. I tried a couple of site adds and got the
same error on both.

Can you please provide the contents of /Users/Jim/Local Sites/fictional-university2/app. Is there a public folder with WordPress files in it?

Any suggestions here? It looks there are WordPress files but I get the red error message stating WordPress installation has failed and my view site button is greyed out.
