Does Local effect my Mac's local webserver environment/Sites folder?

I have an existing development environment on my Mac. I use it for Laravel development – and, I do not want it to be modified in any way.

Does Local by Flywheel modify that local environment or are Local’s sites hosted in Virtual Machines (or some other way)?
