Downloading wordpress loop

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Hi everybody,

I am currently experiencing donwloading issues with WordPress in Local.

Tried to add a new site, but when the process reaches the “Downlaoding WordPress…” part, the process stucks.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Just added a new site, will include logs.

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @hundeath

There could be some different reasons for this happening. One might be a network connection issue. Are you using any kind of VPN, office network or hotspot?

Additionally, you should check out our Windows troubleshooting article below. You’ll want to make sure of some things like that you’re running Local as an admin, that you don’t have any security blockers, and that Local has access to update your Hosts file.

Hi Nick-B,

Checked the troubleshoot page, thanks for sharing it.

First i thought it could be a windows or a host file modification problem.
So i started Local in an Administrative Terminal to see any error.

Checked the download link for the WordPress install file, which is live and indeed starts the download in the browser, but the download speed is very slow.

Added a new site and will wait for an error/timeout or hopefully a finished download.
So my problem probably is from slow download speed, but will update if it is not.

After waiting for 1 hour for the download there is no change, still stuck at “Downloading WordPress”.

But i could download WordPress from the link in the terminal. Could i use the same file for offline install somehow or it is not possible?

Also went through the Troubleshoot page again so i dont miss anything:

  • Local was running as Administrator.
  • Hosts file Read-Only attribute is checked off.
  • In the firewall local.exe was added and allowed, also i have only Windows Defender.
  • I don’t have special characters in my Windows or WordPress Username.

Hi @hundeath

Thank you for your thorough troubleshooting so far. You could try and get things going manually, but ideally it would be great if things worked natively for you as well. It seems like this might be a network connection problem. Is there anything unique about your network or are you able to test a different connection?

Are you running other developer applications simultaneously? That could also cause similar issues. Apps like MAMP, XAMPP, or Docker for example.

Hi @Nick-B ,

I made it work!

It seems to be a compatibility issue with Windows 11.

I switched Local in the compatibility options to Windows 7 and its working properly now.

Should i check this comment as a solution?

Also big thank you for the fast support!

That’s interesting because Local is fully compatible with Windows 11, but no longer supports Windows 7. So I’m not sure what happened with that change to get things working for you, but it might be something unique to your device or user perhaps.

Perhaps it is uniqe to my device or my user but its working now, so i am happy because i didn’t wanted to use other solutions like XAMPP or MAMP. LocalWP was a game changer for me. Easy to use and fast.

Once again thanks for all your help and have a nice day
