Gutenberg is not working correctly

What issue or error are you experiencing?

I want to use the Gutenberg (Block) Editor. It works fine in Pages, but it does not work in templates. In Templates I can select a block, but not drag it on the main screen. It’s grayed out. I can see I dragged a block (for example a header or a text block), but cannot work on it on the main window in the middle.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Open WordPress in Local WP.
Open a Theme suitable for the block editor (not Hello Elementor)
Open any page, it will work fine.
Open a template (header, single Post, etc), the big window in the middle is grayed out.

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Could you share a full Local Log here @josf? I’ll share it with our Devs and see if they can replicate or find anything amiss.

I’ve been unable to reproduce this under Ubuntu 24 so far. I’m able to edit templates in the block editor without issue with a stock WordPress 7 install:

Are you using the default theme with no plugins, @josf? If it continues to fail under those conditions, it may help us to have a screenshot and browser console logs.

Yes, bare bone installation.
Again, PAGES is not the issue. It’s the TEMPLATES where everything goes bonkers.

My screenshot above was from the Appearance → Editor → Templates → [Pages template] area, which is why you see “Pages” in the title bar. (I’m editing a template, though, not a page.)

Happy to take another look if you’d like to share screenshots and console logs.
