Where is the 5.8 full site editing feature?

As the title suggest, I have triple checked usual suspects (Wordpress 5.8.1 alpha, beta tester plugin, 2021 theme, latest Gutenberg).

Yet I am not seeing the template editing feature that everyone is raving about?

I also created this very exact same support thread request at Wordpress.org Gutenberg support (had to create an account just for this enquiry). Days later - nobody responded.

Am I the only one that is facing this issue? My skills in Wordpress is certainly not that “new”.

I was tripped up with something similar initially. First thing I would do is review the " Step 1: Setup your site" section of the FSE Editing handbook:

For me it was the realization that you have have a theme that supports it. The default twentytwentyone theme doesn’t have that support, and instead you need to install the tt1-blocks theme.

I was able to get things up and running like so:

  1. Create new site in Local

  2. Right-click on the site and select “Open Site Shell”

  3. Use WPCLI to install Gutenberg and tt1-blocks

    wp theme install tt1-blocks --activate
    wp plugin install gutenberg --activate

  4. Log into the site and see the new “Site Editor (Beta)” item in the menu

Good luck and have fun!

Also @andy85 – do you have a link to that wordpress.org support ticket?

I’d love to pass along this info there so that it helps the larger WP community!

Ben turner, much appreciated for the prompt empathy. it’s really strange and frustrating that nobody picks this up. Months since its hype (since April) - one would expect big sites and news portals on WP community stick-ied these at the front page for everyone (“new” users to WP included).

The URL where I posted an official thread at Wordpress.org’s Gutenberg is:

I will follow your workaround soon although it’s 1AM where I am. But I shall keep this thread updated how it all unfolds.

sincere thx once again. a85.

Just an update that yes, finally it appears to have been enabled. TT-1 theme is definitely required.

However this then raises a question, as such a theme is based around sandbox testing and development, why then, many other big WP news portals successfully tinkered the same FSE functionality on ALL earlier WP Themes - 2017, 2019, 2020?

I’ll dig the links as url references to back up my point. however since it’s getting late and that I am well due to tinker the FSE editing asap I’ll have my priorities quickly filling up for the weekend and the next ahead.

thank you Ben once again for the help much appreciated.
