Migrating from Local to wordpress.com

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Hi there - I’m a total noooob, and I’m stuck. I’ve built my site in Local and have Wordpress.com as my host, but I can’t find any documentaiton/tutorials on how to migrate from Local to wp.com. I’ve exported my site to a .zip file but when I try and import the .zip file wp.com says it’s not a supported file type.

Many thanks in advane.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @carlton191 - thanks for using Local! Welcome to the community

I’m not familiar with WordPress.com’s expected file structure specifically, so I’m not sure what specific error you may be running into.

Your best bet is to use some kind of migration plugin that handles the heavy lifting for you. I prefer and always recommend WP Migrate - they’re another product built by WP Engine as well! There are also other migration plugins out there you could check out; All-In-One WP Migration and Duplicator are both common migration plugins in WordPress.

The typical workflow looks something like this:

  1. Build your site in Local
  2. Install the migration plugin on your Local site
  3. Install the plugin on your hosted site (in this case, on WordPress.com)
  4. Follow the plugin’s instructions to move files between the two environments

Hopefully this is helpful!
