New computer and only access to files but not exported sites - Can I transfer files?

Continuing the discussion from Moved to a new computer without exporting. Migrate?:

Issue Summary

I have the same issue. I haven’t exported my sites, but I still have access through a backup to the files of the old computer. Any way how I can save the old sites, migrate them over without having to set up all the sites again?

System Details

  • Which version of Local is being used? 6.6.0

  • What Operating System (OS) and OS version is being used?

    • macOS

Hi @salamalala

There isn’t a real simple or “bulk” way to handle this. The best way will probably be to zip up each site and then import them one at a time into Local.

If you still have access to the old computer, you could also use Cloud Backups to upload the sites and then re-load them into the new machine.

@Nick-B
I have been trying to figure this out for hours. Looks like I have over 30 sites on my old computer, and the first one is taking (so far) about 20-30 mins just to export, so I’m in for a long depressing slog here. Sure would be lovely if there was some sort of way to backup and restore the databases, that didn’t involve exporting, transferring, and redundantly importing humongous websites. I already have all the files transferred, just need the database. There’s got to be a better way…

AHHHHHHHHHHH! I have to choose a different domain, and delete the site before importing it! And it’s screwing up all my local SSL certs. Chrome is saying that the credentials are “scrambled” now. Looks like I can’t reuse the old domains at all, and will have to migrate to a new local domain no matter what.

Just a heads up for anyone trying to migrate to have a new computer, maybe cancel your plans for the day. You are going to be busy.

Hi @shane.mccurdy

How large are these sites you’re trying to export? Even for a large site, 20-30 minutes definitely seems to be longer than necessary. I just tested exporting a WordPress site I built with the native Local export and it took less than a minute for example.

Another option could be using a plugin like WP Migrate to just move over the database.

As far as the domains, when you delete a site Local should prompt you for a password so your machine can update your hosts file, clearing that domain which will then allow it to be used on the other side. I’m not sure that it will still resolve Chrome issues as the browser can be very sticky sometimes.
