I installed Local to develop some sites and currently have a project that requires me to run MAMP. However, while Local still works, MAMP won’t let me connect to my sites. I suspect this has something to do with local hosts, etc. Thats just a bit over my head. Any way to get these two to play nice together on the same machine?
You can absolutely use Local and MAMP together. 
The only thing you need to avoid is having the same domain (example: site.dev) in both MAMP and Local.
