Windows 10 Local 6.4.0 Cannot Update Hosts File

Issue Summary

Uh-oh! Could not update host file. I see a notification window pop up at the bottom right corner of my Windows. I click on it and it hides but the hosts file does not get updated.

Windows hosts file DOES NOT have read only.

Troubleshooting Questions

  • Does this happen for all sites in Local, or just one in particular? All sites.

  • Are you able to create a new, plain WordPress site in Local and access it in a Browser? Yes, the site gets created but I need to manually update my Windows hosts file by adding in my site domains to make it work.

Security Reminder

Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.
