Can't log in to WP Admin -- how do I regain access?

When I try to log in to WP Admin to work on my site, my email address is rejected. I’ve been using this address for months (gmail) to access WP Admin with no issues. I have two other addresses and those were rejected to. I can’t request a new password. Not sure how to resolve. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Steps taken to replicate the issue

  1. Updated Local to latest version, relaunched app, my email again rejected again when trying to log in

  1. Contacted Support at Local by Flywheel. They had me relaunch the app again, but email still rejected. Supported directed me to “Site Shell” but that link is not responsive so nothing could be done there. Support sent me here.

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @Nick-2024

If you click on the Lost your password you can try doing a reset that way. The email will get sent to our mailcatcher function in the Local app called Mailpit.

Normally we would advise using Site Shell since you can use CLI to create or edit users. There might be another issue relating to your Site Shell not opening.

Are you able to find Terminal on your device and access it independently?

Is this a device issued by an employer or a personal one?

I am also trying to reset my wp-admin password using ‘Lost your password?’ but I’m not receiving the email in Mailpit nor my own email. I am working on a personal iMac. Please advise.

Hi, Nick-B, you’ve helped me in the past and I appreciate it. I have gained access and set up a new password. I don’t know why my email address is rejected. I tried a username and that worked (!), allowing me to get in and change the password. The “site shell” link still does not respond. I don’t know why. The Terminal app on my iMac opens as usual, I think you asked about that if understood correctly. And: this is my personal device. Do you have anything to suggest regarding “site shell” not opening? thanks again.

@Katazen If you click on Site Shell are you able to open a terminal window? That works then you can use our steps here to create a new admin or edit the password for an existing one.

@Nick-2024 Do you have any additional antivirus, security, or firewall applications that could be interfering? What about other developer applications? Apps like MAMP, XAMPP, or Docker for example.

If you go to Preferences > Appearance & Behavior you can also change which Terminal app to use if you wanted to see if another would work. You might have to install one of the options in there first if you don’t already utilize any others.

Thanks for your reply. I had tried following the steps ‘Reset a WordPress admin password’ which was how I learnt that Site Shell wouldn’t open. Not sure if changing the domain name beforehand had anything to do with this. Anyhow, I exported the site and uploaded it to the live server. It’s up and running now!
