Running into this issue where every time I try to push from Local to WPEngine it just hangs. It seems to pull just fine but pushes do not work. I read some of the similar threads but not really found a solution. We do have a VPN but I’ve tried with the VPN both on and off.

If API access is disable that could be part of the problem. This has to be enabled in order for you to use Local Connect with WPE.
Additionally, the site is over 16 GB in size which poses another problem. While we don’t have a hard limit on the size of a site that can be pulled or pushed with Local, sites that are 5 GB or larger are more likely to encounter issues or timeout limitations while utilizing Local Connect. That’s not to say sites around this size or larger can’t be pushed or pulled, but results may vary.

You may have to try an alternative method for getting site changes up to WPE. You could give their migration plugin a try as one workaround:
