How to work with IONOS hosting

Hello,
I am new to this community and to web development on local devices. I have problems importing my website from IONOS servers into Local on my local device. When I try to import my website files into Local I get an error message reading “Error Importing Site”.
What should I do to import my site in Local and then to export it again live on my server?

Hi @Davide

How are you getting the copy of your site are you using a backup plugin or does IONOS offer backup downloads?

We generally recommend WP Migrate Light which can create a full site export zip file that can be dragged and dropped into Local:

That said, if you’re still having trouble there are workarounds. You can always spin up a new, blank site in Local first and then manually import your content and database. We have some steps here for that:

Manually Import a Local Site

As far as getting your site back to IONOS you might check with them if they have any recommendations. There are likely many migration plugins that will do the trick, like WP Migrate DB PRO. I tried looking on the IONOS website but couldn’t find any clear documentation on migrating or manually importing content into a site so checking with their support would probably be a good idea!

hi @Nick-B !
thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
I will try first your suggested plugin.
If all goes well, can you use the same plugin to re-upload on my webserver the modified version of my website? (I would like to try developping my website locally and upload it once the work is done)

You would have to upgrade to the PRO version in order to migrate back to IONOS so it’s up to you and what fits your needs! That’s why I mentioned it might be a good idea to check with IONOS first as they might have some other workflows that are complimentary with your plan, or they may have other tools they recommend that work better with their platform. I’m not very familiar with their hosting and couldn’t find anything doing a quick check on their site but maybe their support will have some more details.

The IONOS operator I spoke with couldn’t suggest me a way to do that. As to WP Migrate, it keeps showing me an error message telling me it could not export the files.
I tried All-in-one migration plugin, exported my website but Local keeps prompting me with this error message:

despite the previous error messages, WP migrate has just managed to create a file to import in Local. I see there is a mismatch between the DB version I see in my hosting, i.e. MariaDB 10.6
, and the available options in Local (if I remember correctly it showed MariaDB 10.4.10).
Do you think it is a major problem?

The import process was interrupted by this error:

and it kept going on afterwards.
I am not sure what is going on here

Hi @Davide

You should still be able to import, but you might have to unzip your import file and manually import it with the steps here:

Manually Import a Local Site

First step will be to create a new, blank site using the settings you need (Apache, MariaDB, etc)
