With default configs using local host mode I can connect to Local using my WAN ip, but the server serves a 404 error. Howexer with link local sites on it will display but requires auth. So I’m stuck.
What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc
Install Local, and create site with defaults, then forward port on router and connect via external network.
System Details
Local Version:local-9.1.0-windows
Operating System (OS) and OS version:Windows 11 Insider Canary Build
Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.
Nope all that is taken care of already. I can access the routers gui with no port forward, the router hangs on every other port. Checked my ISPs Business prices vs residential which I have. It’s like 1000% markup. They’re probably blocking ports to price gouge businesses. Stupid NEXT in Arkansas…
No not yet, I’m working on it atm. I just don’t have capital for a nice vpn setup now to test. But I will update when I know for sure. Thanks for the quick response!
Although users can and do make use of this type of setup from time to time, there isn’t much else we can offer for troubleshooting. Since this isn’t part of the intended use of Local it’s a bit outside of our scope @kylepcondon
If you want to be able to connect to your site from any machine or network you might have to set up your own server for a staging or development environment that can be accessed from anywhere. Or use a managed hosting option but keep the site private behind an auth.
I have purchased server space and the same problem seems to occur on the VPN. I ran windows 11 VM and installed local in localhost mode and it still hangs when connecting from a different network. I do believe this is a bug. I have alternative OSs, what would the ideal setup be? Ubuntu running local?
Right now the best way to use Local is to download the application to the machine you’re on and import your site. If you work on another machine you’ll have to export/import the site to next machine. You can make this a bit easier by using our Cloud Backups add on.
Right now, we don’t have an easier way to sync and work between multiple devices, but I believe we have a few ideas to that effect that users have created on our Feature Requests page.
I think we might be misunderstanding each other. I simply want one two site on one instance of lcoal on my rented server which I can choose the OS for between, WIndows 10/11 or ubuntu
1 and 2 are correct. But I’m given the server IP which is from dynu.com to my domain registrar which is also dynu.com. but when I access the remote server I get an https warning in the browser which I bypass for now, no ssl certificate right now, and then it just loads forever.
I’m simply trying to serve two webpages to the internet using local but I don’t wan’t user to hav e to sign in I just need the templating and easy engine setup of local, but be able to tie it to a domain name.
Okay so it sounds like you’re trying to publicly host a Local site, or pages, from your server, which again comes back to an issue of this isn’t the intended functionality of Local. Local is meant to be a tool to be able to work on WordPress sites offline, but not to host them and make them public.
If you want to host a site on your own server, this goes a beyond our scope to be able to advise on. Essentially you’ll have to configure your server with your own software, OS, WordPress, etc and then migrate your Local site to it. Or you can use a managed WordPress host.
Ooooooh. Yes my mis-understanding. I thought this was for creating a local wordpress site to then launch publicly. Thank you for clarifying! I will use methods. Thanks for the help!
No problem @kylepcondon! If you have any other questions or concerns regarding Local in the future don’t hesitate to reach back out. We are always happy to help!
