Using local from external hard drive possible?

What issue or error are you experiencing?

Is there any plan to support running a local site from a hard drive that is not the operating system’s hard drive? I understand from another post I can move the folders in Local Sites and move them back when necessary. That would save me 18GB but that wouldn’t include the 37 GB or so that’s located in the appdata folder.

System Details

  • Local Version: 9.2.4+6788

  • Operating System (OS) and OS version: Windows 11

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @bshenk - no plans specifically for this, but we are making progress with this Bug:

I can definitely understand why the 37GB in the AppData folder is troublesome. Do you have any overly large or old sites in your Local app? It might be worth exporting any projects you’re not actively working on, zipping them up, and saving them to an external or Cloud storage until needed.

Do you utilize any different/older versions of things like PHP between your sites? Or do they have different server configurations?

There is (at the moment) a single site on my system currently and this is one of our smaller sites. I didn’t notice the export feature requires the site to be currently running to use, makes sense. I can give that a try.

All of the sites I normally have downloaded all use Nginx, PHP 8.2.27, MySQL 8.0.35. They are roughly all around WordPress 6.5.5. No multisites. 26.3 GB is for MySQL and 8.7 GB is for some docker container(s). I do have Docker Desktop installed so let me know if docker is unrelated and could be removed assuming I don’t need it. Probably safe since I forgot I had Docker Desktop installed haha.

Thanks!
