Using UpdraftPlus to Switch Between Computers

I haven’t yet tried the Dropbox sync method described here:

But here’s one thing that works for me when I’m going on a road trip with my laptop:

  1. Create a site on computer A (e.g., Desktop computer)
  2. Create a site with the same name on computer B (e.g., Laptop computer)
  3. Use UpdraftPlus (or another WordPress backup plugin) on computer A to back up the files and database to Google Drive (or the cloud storage system of your choice)
  4. Use UpdraftPlus on computer B to import (restore) the files from computer A that you backed up on Google Drive. You’ll have to rescan remote storage to see the files from computer A (The link for that is right above the list of backups)
  5. Reverse steps 3 and 4 to restore the files from computer B back to computer A
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 any time you travel

Switching back and forth is a little more work than the Dropbox method. But there’s nothing much to setting it up, and there’s not much that can go wrong because you’ve always got an up-to-date backup.

Download failure

I recently had a problem where my desktop computer failed to download backup files from Google Drive after a session on my laptop. It turned out that the laptop had created a second UpdraftPlus folder in Google Drive.

This has only happened once but it’s something to watch out for. Deleting the second folder (after downloading any important backups) solved the problem.
