Unable to update Local as unable to close Local

What issue or error are you experiencing?

When I try to run the update installer I get a notification that says “Local cannot be closed. Please close it manually and click Retry to continue.”. When I click Retry it just gives me the same message. Local is definitely closed. The only thing Local related I have open is the Local update installer, which I can’t close because then that will stop the update.

What steps can be taken to replicate the issue? Feel free to include screenshots, videos, etc

Security Reminder
Local does a pretty good job of scrubbing private info from the logs and the errors it produces, however there’s always the possibility that something private can come through. Because these are public forums, always review the screenshots you are sharing to make sure there isn’t private info like passwords being displayed.

Hi @hollypryce – Welcome to the Local community!

That is definitely odd. Can you try manually installing the latest version of Local? To do this:

  1. Click “cancel” on that popup and completely quit Local
  2. Next, manually download the latest version of Local from the releases page
  3. Continue with installing the latest version of Local and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for getting back to me!

I’ve tried this and I’m still getting the same error.

Thanks for checking @hollypryce – Another question: when you run the update, are there sites running? Or maybe any Live Links active?

Also, what kind of sites do you have installed? Are they all “Preferred” sites? If not, what kind of custom sites are in use?

Lastly, can provide the Local Logs? You can get a zip of those logs by clicking the “Download Local Log” button from the “Support” tab of Local. See this help doc for more information:

There are no sites running when I try to update and there are no live links active. They’re all preferred sites.

Here is the local logs file:
local-logs.zip (345.9 KB)

I’m not seeing anything obvious in these logs.

Do you remember how you installed this originally?

For example, was the original installation run as a regular user, or an administrator?

Was it originally installed just for this one user, or for all users of the computer?

Unfortunately, I can’t remember how I installed this originally as I’ve had it installed for about 4 or 5 years now.

This related post was solved by the user fully uninstalling Local (including the user config foler)

I’m still not sure how Local got into this state, but one thing you can try is:

  1. Backup your sites by right-clicking on each site and selecting “Export” to create a zip archive
  2. Completely uninstall Local by following the steps in our Uninstall Doc: Uninstall Local - Local
  3. Download and re-install Local: Releases - Local
  4. Import your sites by dragging and dropping them onto Local

Can you give that a try and let us know how that goes?

Sorry it’s taken me forever to get back to you. I was trying to find time to manually export and import all of my Local sites as there was a lot to get through!

I followed the steps you provided and I’m happy to report I’m now running the latest version of Local WP on my computer. Thank you for your help!
